Here is something for folks to chew on:
As part of my library science degree at Dominican University, I am taking a class focusing on competitive intelligence. On the first night of the class, the professor challenged (in a good way) my thinking about KM. His challenge to me was "Is the information we gather as part of a KM capability current?" Can it be used for real time strategic decision making?
I started to think about this....If all we use our KM capability for is to capture lessons learned and client experience, this is by nature information that is not timely. We can use it to help not step in the same holes as we did before but how can we use it in a forward thinking way to help our organizations respond to the fluid nature of business.
Any thoughts on that...please comment.

Information collected in traditional KM systems is almost guaranteed to be out of date as soon as it is "published." Particularly, taken in the light of being able to make decisions and take immediate action in business.
If this is so, what do we need to do in business to enable a function like competitive intelligence, where the information needs to be current and useful in some way.

Eugene,
If we define Knowledge as the learning of putting information into action, than Knowledge cannot be created upfront an experience. Captured knowledge needs to be appropriately applied to scenarios (thats why it should say appropriate practices, not best practices) and again the learning captured for future scenarios. Therefore the saying 'trial and erro', 'look and learn', 'learn from your mistakes'.
Appropriate application of knowledge to scenarios will allow for the reduction of wasted time and resources - getting the job done better and quicker - the old comparison of the 30year experienced handyman against the booksmart XGeneration homeowner.
